Mechanical Engineer
Full-time
Chicago, IL, USA
Location: Chicago, IL (Option for Hybrid, Remote work)
Company: memQ
Position Overview
At memQ, we are building extensible quantum networks that will unlock the real power of quantum computing! Recognized as the leaders in extending and connecting quantum systems at scale, we sit at the dynamic intersection of quantum physics, materials science, photonics, and information systems. Powered by a world-class, diverse team of experts, we foster a high-energy, collaborative environment where our groundbreaking photonic integrated circuits and software deliver the essential scalability solutions quantum systems need today.
We are moving fast with an ambitious hardware portfolio, which includes our quantum network interface controllers (QNIC), quantum memory modules (QMM), quantum control systems (QCS), and our extensible distributed quantum compiler software (xDQC) – and are actively deploying these with industry-leading partners and customers. To drive this next chapter of growth, We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to design the precision hardware behind memQ’s quantum networking systems. You will design ultra-high vacuum (UHV) and opto-mechanical assemblies for our neutral atom and cavity QED systems, along with the housings, fixtures, and thermal management for our packaged photonic modules. Working closely with our atomic physics, cavity design, packaging, and test teams, you will take designs from concept and CAD through fabrication, assembly, and qualification.
Key Responsibilities
-
UHV & Opto-Mechanical Design: Design vacuum chambers, flanges, feedthroughs, and in-vacuum mounts for optics, optical cavities, and photonic chips, with attention to bake-out compatibility, outgassing, and long-term alignment stability
-
Precision Mounts: Design stable, adjustable mounts for optics, fibers, and resonators, including the thermal and vibration management needed to hold alignment
-
Photonic Module Packaging: Design module housings, fiber and RF interfaces, assembly fixtures, and heat sinking for packaged photonic integrated circuits, working with our packaging engineers and external partners
-
Analysis: Perform tolerance stack-ups and thermal and structural analysis (FEA) to validate designs before fabrication
-
Fabrication & Vendors: Produce manufacturing drawings with GD&T, work with machine shops and vacuum component vendors, and support assembly, leak testing, and qualification
-
Documentation: Maintain CAD models, drawings, BOMs, and assembly procedures under revision control
Required Qualifications
-
Education: BS in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
-
Experience: 2+ years of hands-on mechanical design experience in a lab, R&D, or product environment (internships, co-ops, and research count)
-
Technical Skills: Proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Creo, or similar) and engineering drawings with GD&T
-
Experience with thermal and structural FEA (ANSYS, COMSOL, SolidWorks Simulation, or similar)
-
Hands-on experience with machining, fabrication, and assembly processes
-
Knowledge: Understanding of vacuum hardware (ConFlat and KF), material selection for vacuum and thermal stability, and precision alignment
Bonus Points
-
Experience designing UHV systems for atomic physics experiments, including bakeable assemblies
-
Opto-mechanical design experience with lasers, fiber optics, or optical cavities
-
Familiarity with photonic or microelectronic packaging (fiber attach, die attach, hermetic sealing)
-
Experience designing cryogenic hardware
-
Python or MATLAB for analysis and design automation
What We Offer
-
Competitive salary and performance-based incentives
-
Equity options in a high-growth quantum tech company
-
Comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and retirement plans
-
Opportunities for professional development in one of the most innovative fields in technology
