About the Role
We’re seeking a motivated Mechanical Designer to join our engineering and product development team. In this role, you’ll support drafting, documentation, and design activities that help transform concepts into manufacturable solutions. You’ll work closely with engineers, contribute to product and fabrication workflows, and produce accurate technical drawings using SolidWorks. This position is ideal for someone early in their career who is eager to grow, collaborate, and refine their technical skill set. Work location would be IBM T.J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, NY.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Drafting — Create and revise 2D/3D drawings, assemblies, and detailed component models in SolidWorks.
- Design Support — Assist engineers with concept development, prototyping documentation, and design iterations.
- Standards Compliance — Ensure all drawings meet internal standards, industry codes, and project specifications.
- Documentation Management — Maintain organized drawing files, revision histories, and accurate bill‑of‑materials data.
- Cross‑Functional Collaboration — Work with engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams to resolve design issues and support production readiness.
- Continuous Improvement — Identify opportunities to streamline drafting workflows and enhance design clarity.
Required Qualifications
- Engineering Background — Degree or equivalent technical training in mechanical, industrial, or related engineering fields.
- Drafting Experience — 1–3 years of hands‑on drafting experience in an engineering or manufacturing environment.
- SolidWorks Proficiency — Ability to model parts, create assemblies, generate drawings, and apply design intent.
- Manufacturing Knowledge — Understanding of fabrication methods, tolerances, and material behavior.
- Communication Skills — Ability to clearly convey technical information and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
Preferred Skills
- GD&T Familiarity — Basic understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
- PDM Systems — Experience with SolidWorks PDM or similar document‑control tools.
- Prototype Support — Exposure to testing, assembly, or hands‑on fabrication environments.
