As a Cryogenic Plant Engineer, you will participate in the design, installation, commissioning and operation of helium refrigeration plants in support of IBM Quantum's mission of delivering useful quantum computing to the world. The scope of your role may include assisting in the procurement of cryogenic equipment in collaboration with vendors; supporting the installation of equipment and piping systems; the commissioning and testing of helium refrigeration plants and associated equipment; and the operation of helium refrigeration plants.
- The behavior of materials at cryogenic temperatures.
- Design and operational principles of helium refrigeration plants and associated components.
- Understand and interpret process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams, mechanical drawings, and related documentation.
- Properties of cryogenic fluids and associated calculations for flow of helium in pipes and heat transfer in heat exchangers.
- Knowledge of ASME and similar codes related to pressure vessels, process piping and welding.
- Design, programming and operation of PLC-based control systems.
- Project management and hardware subsystem oversight, including vendor interaction for cryogenic equipment manufacture.
- Operation of helium refrigeration plants.
- Development, documentation, and execution of cryogenic test programs, including documenting and reporting results.
